Fr John L. Sullivan (Letters, 30 November) rightly raises the question of the enormity of preaching the Gospel. Indeed, where do we begin? In 1970 I was in the West Indies with one Dominican nun, helping to start a Catholic secondary school for the poorer children. I was faced with an assortment of boys and girls aged 12-16. Wondering where I should start in religious education, and suspecting the worst, I sat them down with a small piece of paper and said, “Write what you think about Jesus Christ. And I mean what you think, and not what you think I think, and not what you think I want you to think!” (I thought that cleared the ground).After 10 minutes I collected the papers. The best, which summed up the situation nicely, was from a girl of 14. She wrote: “Jesus Christ
