At the Spanish Gallery in Bishop Auckland, Co. Durham, there’s a micro-exhibition that commemorates the 800th anniversary of the birth of Thomas Aquinas – probably in 1225 – and of God’s gift to St Francis in September 1224 of the stigmata, the marks of the wounds of the crucified Christ. Remarkably, while the St Francis anniversary was widely commemorated with exhibitions and events, this small show in the north-east of England is a relatively rare recognition of the significance of Aquinas to Christian thought.
