Two days before Cardinal Vincent Nichols turned 80 in November, I interviewed him in his spacious, primrose-walled office in Archbishop’s House.

Once, she dropped in at Archbishop’s House to collect household items donated for the refuge. There were too many for her to carry back on public transport. Nichols told her: “I’ll get you a driver.” When the car appeared 10 minutes later, the “driver” turned out to be Nichols himself. Last year he conducted a Mass for Bakhita House’s tenth anniversary. “He spoke from the heart, not the head,” says Anstiss.
