Our Lady of Aparecida is less than a metre in height. But she is mighty.

It was a very ordinary weekday morning, but already the immense car park of the Basilica of Our Lady of Aparecida was beginning to fill up.

Ample space is set aside for truck drivers who spend their lives ploughing the highway between São Paolo and Rio and want to drop by to say a prayer, light a candle, or make their Confession. The pantechnicons neatly lined up at the edge of the site may be incongruous, but are a clear sign that this is a church of the people.
