Maths teaching in this country is being overhauled with help from teachers from Shanghai. Aidan Hogan, a maths teacher at St Mark’s Catholic School in London, explains what he has learned
When two teachers from Shanghai arrived at my Hounslow secondary school to teach maths for a few weeks before Christmas, there was much excitement among our pupils.Yingzhen Guo taught fractions and Bany Chen taught multiplication of decimals, each to two different groups in Year 7 (aged 11-12). Despite the occasional language barrier, the lessons proved popular with the students, to such an extent that some of them even took to running to maths lessons.Yingzhen and Bany, both women, were among 65 maths teachers from Shanghai who were flown in to teach maths in secondary schools throughout the UK.
