There’s no knowing the nation’s appetite, what grips us or what will pass us by. Chatting to my 17-year-old daughter on the telephone two Sundays ago, she said she had to ring off “to watch The Hunt”. The what? “It’s all about animals and their prey,” she said. “You know, David Attenborough? He’s so cool.” Our talk ended and I switched on, curious. I watched a blue whale swim 100 miles searching for a meal of krill. These enormous mammals hunt only for full helpings, one tonne of prey at a time. They expend huge amounts of energy simply opening their gigantic mouths, so cannot snack as they swim along.
