A hundred years ago, on 23 October 1915, a young Irishwoman, Marie Martin, arrived in Malta aboard the hospital ship Oxfordshire. She had trained with the Voluntary Aid Detachment of the Red Cross.Just after Christmas, Marie learned that her soldier brother, Charlie, was missing in Serbia. Six months later she heard the young lieutenant had died two days after his capture – just one week before his 21st birthday.By this time Marie was in France.
