Justice at last for the Cold War martyrs


 
Thousands of Christians were murdered by the Communists in Eastern Europe during the twentieth century. Some undoubtedly died for their beliefs but are only now being recognised When the remains of a Czech priest were exhumed from an unmarked grave and re-interred in his former parish church last month, attention was drawn back to the fate of Christians martyred under Communist rule.Fr Josef Toufar was denounced as a fraudster in the Communist-controlled media of then Czechoslovakia when, in December 1949, a tabernacle cross moved inexplicably while he was preaching. After a brutal six-hour interrogation, the 47-year-old priest signed a confession that he had rigged the alleged miracle.
