Trading away poverty

The Millennium Development Goals agreed by UN member states had aid as their prime focus. The new Sustainable Development Goals are more about trade and the West will have to think carefully about the impact on developing countries Days after Pope Francis is due to address the United Nations General Assembly in September, world governments will consider a new framework with the key aim to eliminate poverty by 2030. With 836 million people still living on less than US$1.25 (80p) a day the new targets – known as the Sustainable Development Goals, or SDGs – are highly ambitious.The SDGs seek to address issues that the Millennium Development Goals did not, including environmental degradation, climate change and human rights.
