Time to end the low-pay culture

The low wages paid by some of Britain’s biggest employers are to blame for the soaring benefits bill, according to Citizens UK, a grassroots movement supported by the Church aA religious sister last week put a pressing question to the annual general meeting (AGM) of the UK’s largest retailer, Tesco. “Is it right that we, UK taxpayers, should top up your low-wage culture to the tune of £364 million per year?”Sr Pat Holloway, from the parish of Our Lady of Grace and St Edward, Chiswick, and a leader in the west London chapter of Citizens UK, is a member of a campaign to persuade companies to pay the living wage.
