Land in need of a miracle

Could last week’s beatification of the assassinated archbishop make a difference to his troubled country, still torn apart by gang wars and casual violence? One miracle that Blessed Oscar Romero achieved on the day of his beatification in San Salvador last Saturday was the coming together of the Salvadorean people, who used to be bitterly divided even within the Catholic Church. The divisions were between left and right, rich and poor, Romero’s former critics and his supporters. Yet Romero was not only a relentless defender of the poor, of social justice and of national reconciliation, he was also a figure of non-violence and peace.This example might be harder for Salvadorans to follow.
