So we are guilty. It is hard, when you hear climate change talked of as being “man-made”, not to take it personally. We did it; our motors and factory chimneys, their emissions and their pollutants. Consumerism ate the planet and each one of us is being asked to take on the burden of responsibility. And yet, while it is obviously personal choice that makes one leap in a car to drive to work, there are some things we do not ask for.
I have yet to hear the food industry being blamed for its fair share of the damage. A shopper buys a piece of beef or orders hamburgers when eating out, but is rarely told how much fuel it took to bring a beef animal to maturity. The figures are disturbing. Some claim it takes 4.5 litres of diesel to produce 500g beef.
