Seeds of faith for Africa’s rich earth

African women farmers will benefit from the Lenten Appeal launched by Scotland’s Catholic aid agency, Sciaf. The Archbishop of St Andrews and Edinburgh has just returned from Malawi where he has seen the material and spiritual benefits of the campaign at first hand According to Proverbs 19:17: “One who is gracious to a poor man lends to the Lord, and he will repay him for his good deed.” The nature of Lenten almsgiving is that it both spiritually benefits the giver and materially benefits the recipient. Some may suggest that that is a pious platitude, but having spent five days in Malawi with the Scottish Catholic International Aid Fund (Sciaf), I conclude that it is incontrovertibly true.
