The man who will welcome Pope Francis to the US next year tells Austen Ivereigh that his reputation as one of America’s culture warriors is wide of the mark
The two men of the moment in the US Catholic hierarchy are both Capuchin Franciscans who have known Pope Francis for many years. Cardinal Seán O’Malley of Boston is one of the so-called “C9” who sits in the Pope’s kitchen cabinet and heads his sex-abuse commission, while Archbishop Charles Chaput, the host of the eighth World Meeting of Families in his diocese of Philadelphia, will welcome Francis to the US when he arrives in September next year.Seen through the media lens of “liberal” (good) vs “conservative” (bad), the two friars are often set off against each other.
