Exodus fuelled by fear

The number of Jews emigrating from France to Israel has virtually doubled in the last year. Those who are leaving cite rising anti-Semitism and fears that a generation of French Muslims is being radicalised In a synagogue courtyard in a northern suburb of Paris, 100 or so families gather round trestle tables laden with food. They are smartly dressed up because it is Simchat Torah, the day in the Jewish calendar when they celebrate the Jewish holy book. The men are wearing kippas, and so are visibly Jewish. Some French Jewish leaders now urge Jews not to wear their skullcaps in the street in order to avoid trouble. But Sarcelles – or “Little Jersusalem” as it is sometimes called – is different.
