Ecumenical sound of leather on willow

There is nothing like team sport for creating a spirit of harmony and that is just what happened when a cricket XI from the Vatican played another from the Church of England on a beautiful autumn day in Canterbury Whoever composed the order of service for evensong at Canterbury Cathedral last Thursday clearly has a sense of humour. “The Lord hath put on his apparel and girded himself with strength,” the choir sang; “And his clothes became dazzling white,” came the reading from St Mark’s Gospel; “O Thou, the central orb,” was the title of the anthem. No one could miss the significance, least of all the young men of the St Peter’s cricket club from the Vatican and the Archbishop of Canterbury’s XI, who were to play a limited-overs game
