Mr Morland refers to "the fact that humanity is on the road to … eventual disappearance". But this is not a fact. It is a mere assertion. We know from recent history, including data he quotes in his own article, how dramatically trends in birth rate can vary over a short space of time.
As to his main point, there are of course very powerful arguments, which he lightly skips over, in the opposite direction. Does our planet have the natural resources to support the whole current population of human beings at the standard of living attained in the developed world, and eagerly desired elsewhere? If Russia China and India continue with their current policies much longer, will those natural resources collapse as a result of climate change? Would such instability be likely to provoke further international conflicts, perhaps even one taken as far as catastrophic nuclear war?
I hope we are to see more thoroughgoing contributions in the weeks ahead.
