In an age of digital overload, proliferating online publishing and burgeoning social media, is it not a little retrograde to initiate a “traditional” university press? St Mary’s University certainly took a bold step earlier this year when it launched St Mary’s University Press and its imprint, the Strawberry Hill Press. But we are following in the footsteps of an audacious forebear. The original Strawberry Hill Press was established in the grounds of his extraordinary home in Twickenham by Horace Walpole in June 1757, and it operated until 1789.
