Lent reflection 4: ‘My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?’

This week we look at the fourth of the Seven Last Words of Christ (the seven last sayings of Jesus as recorded in the Gospels). It is recorded in Matthew 27:46 and Mark 15:34: Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani (“My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”). This cry, echoing Psalm 22:1, is one of the most heart-wrenching moments in the Passion story, revealing the depth of Jesus’ suffering and his feeling of abandonment at the height of his physical and spiritual agony ... moments before his death.
