THE RESULTS of a recent competition among wine retailers provided what to many observers was the surprising news that supermarket “own label” wines were quite good, and that stores such as Aldi and Lidl could be ranked alongside – if not above – the more established names. All of this will be no surprise to readers of this little column.In addition to those I have mentioned, the last few months, Tesco does a reasonable “French white wine” for less than £4. Although quite light (10.5 per cent), it is surprisingly flavoursome – lots of melon fruit – and just good value. As with many of these wines, there is little information on the label, but  this wine appears to be made (or at least bottled) in a place called Landiras. I recently
