Fine piece, Catherine. My compliments. Further issues about the appointment of Byrne include whether, if any, Archbishop Bernard Longley (no relation) of Birmingham was consulted about the promotion of one of his auxiliaries to a diocese, and was he aware of safeguarding matters concerning Byrne. The problem with trying to get an answer is of course Vatican secrecy. Bernard Longley has a good reputation on safeguarding, despite early mistakes, and is an obvious candidate for Westminster when Nichols retires. But Byrne will remain a stain on his copybook until the issue is cleared up. I hope it can be.
