There can be no national leader who will face a more agonising or fateful choice in the coming weeks than President Zelenskiy. At some point he will have to weigh the losses against the gains and judge whether or when to end the fight
FROM THE DAY that Russia invaded his country – 24 February 2022 – Volodymyr Zelenskiy has stood as a model for wartime leadership. His
reward – along with the stress lines that now mark his once youthful face – has been the acclamation of his people and the universal
respect of his new friends abroad. He has reminded the world once again of how the behaviour of a single individual can change history.
By remaining demonstratively in the capital, Kyiv, delivering a nationwide broadcast every day, and deploying all his considerable gifts
in support of resistance, Zelenskiy kept his ministers and top brass united and inspired Ukrainians to fight. Whatever the outcome of the war, his response to the Russian invasion will be studied for decades as a guide to how to lead in the information age.
