SWITZERLAND DOES not spring readily to mind as a wineproducing nation and, given that less than two per cent of its wine is exported, few will have drunk Swiss wine outside its borders. The Swiss do not make enough wine even for their home market.
Swiss wine also has a reputation for being expensive, due partly to the fact that the Swiss cost of living is among the highest in Europe and partly because of production methods and quantities. Most wine is produced in minuscule quantities from small parcels of land, often located on steep slopes, thus limiting the use of cost-saving machinery. That said, it is slightly cheaper than that of comparable quality wine from its neighbours France, Germany and Austria.
