There is a theory that once humans discovered fire there came the cooking of food and, with the ability to heat food and make it safer to eat, came the triumph of the human species. The baking of bread was fundamental to the development of civilisation.

Yet here we are in 2022 and some families on low incomes cannot afford to use their ovens. “What we are seeing now is something that none of us has seen in our lifetimes,” says Dan Paskins, director of UK Impact at Save the Children. “People – including working families – are now avoiding cooking family meals and eating cold food in cold homes.”
