I often joke about the detrimental effect supporting my football team has had on my life. When I first became a Catholic, a priest asked me about myself. I told him I was inclined towards despondency.
“Why do you think that is?” he wondered.
“I support West Bromwich Albion,” I joked, kind of.
“Oh, I see,” he said.
I still don’t know whether he was taking me seriously. Neither do I know, actually, if I was entirely joking.
