On Thursday 13 May, Ascension Thursday (and also the beginning of the Muslim festival of Eid al-Fitr), the members of the newly elected Scottish Parliament took their oaths and affirmations.
Using a variety of different languages to do this has become a ritual in itself, a celebration of Scotland’s diversity. This year, the languages used included English, Gaelic, Scots, Doric (Aberdonian Scots), Orcadian, Welsh, German, French Canadian, Punjabi, Urdu, Arabic, Zimbabwean Shona and British Sign Language. All the parties share in this celebration of diversity: the new Conservative Sikh MSP Pam Gosal said a Sikh prayer before she professed her loyalty in Punjabi to the Queen and her heirs and successors under law.
