Last year 27,000 students in England left university without completing their courses. Isabel de Bertodano explores the reasons and what more can be done to help young people determine whether university is for themSophie Kaitcer is not the kind of student whom one would expect to drop out of university. One of her school’s highest achievers, she got very good A levels, including an A* in economics. However, when she reached the University of Birmingham to study law and French, she knew it was not for her. She swapped to economics, but only lasted eight weeks before quitting.“It just didn’t feel right,” she said. “I couldn’t find any good reason why I was at uni and it seemed like I was studying for the sake of it without really being interested.”
