In the early days of the pandemic we knew nothing. Then all of a sudden we all knew everything. We became epidemiologists, serologists or behavioural scientists. In between those two stages, however, all we had was rumour and gossip, some of which turned out to be true.
The first rumour I heard was that the disease only affected smokers. Then we heard that it only affected the very old, or people with existing health conditions. Then it was said to affect health workers disproportionately. Then it was BAME people, who, of course, are often working in the health service.
