Lent Meditation: Road to the Promised Land

For the Christian, getting married or entering the religious life leads to an understanding that life is no longer one’s own. As Luke Bell writes in his second Lent reflection, those who readily give up ownership of the self gain everything Lent is a journey, an inner journey of the heart. It echoes the great journey of Jesus in which he set his face to go to Jerusalem to suffer and die, and to the Jerusalem above, our celestial motherland. It parallels the journey of the people of Israel in which they forewent the garlic, leeks and onions of Egypt in their peregrinations to the Promised Land. It re-enacts the journey of Abraham in response to the Lord’s invitation, “Leave your country, your family and your father’s house, for the land which I will show you.&rdquo
