Driving through the glorious Somerset countryside to Downside School, on a sunny autumn morning, it is hard to believe that the place was ever an unsafe berth for children. The Catholic boarding school, standing next to a Benedictine monastery, appears just the kind of place to offer security, tradition and a top-class English education.

But, as has been extensively reported over the summer, the school has not always been a safe place.
