Roxanna Panufnik is having nightmares about the Last Night of the Proms. Not nightmares exactly, but definitely anxiety dreams: sometimes she goes to the wrong venue for the rehearsal, sometimes the singers have been given the wrong parts, and sometimes there’s some other ghastly turn of events that makes the whole thing come crashing down.

It’s all perfectly understandable because tonight at the Royal Albert Hall a new work by Panufnik will be sharing the spotlight with “Rule Britannia” and “Jerusalem”. “It’s the scariest thing,” she says. “It’s an entirely new piece, and I don’t know if it will work – and I won’t know until it’s too late. But it’s also an amazing opportunity, and it’s giving me fantastic visibility.”
