At their Spring General Assembly in June, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops made news with what some would call a prophetic dissent from the “zero tolerance” policy adopted by President Donald Trump towards migrants attempting to cross from Mexico into the US. …
But on another issue, abortion, the bishops and the president are almost always in accord. Trump, who says he has evolved from a “pro-choice” to a “pro-life” position, promised during the 2016 campaign to appoint “pro-life” justices to the Supreme Court, with the result that the Roe vs Wade decision legalising abortion would be overruled, and states would be able again to heavily regulate or even outlaw the procedure.
