When I decided to write a play about Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, I was clear what the central drama of my story would be: would he or would he not sign a document assenting to six propositions, so demonstrating to Rome’s satisfaction that he was not a heretic? Five of the propositions he could swallow. But one he knew was false. He agonised over what to do for several months. Yet, in the end, he signed – it was a Galileo moment.
