UK vegetables and fruit are not the most wrapped in the world. We’re runners up to Dubai, where almost everything is imported except dates, and even lemons are shrink-wrapped. What is it about British supermarkets that has created this obsession with enveloping produce in several layers of plastic?

All over the world the majority of fresh produce is sold loose.
