When Pope Francis was elected, many churches were drawing back into themselves. For some, it was a question of survival in increasingly secular times.

Some were having to deal with scandals. In the public perception, the Church had lost credibility. Confidence and energy were in short supply. Ecumenical bodies at national and international levels were having a tough time, as churches were more inclined to go it alone.
