I hate to wheel out the hoariest of Bible sayings, but the good Lord does move in mysterious ways. I neither sought nor expected any spiritual or temporal reward for writing a column in this Catholic organ. However, it might have been nice if I’d ever got any sense of some divine support for my football team. Actually, I’d have settled for something less than active support – mere mystical neutrality would have done just fine. Anything would be better than what we’ve got: the sense that West Bromwich Albion’s doom this season is preordained. We have no free will. However well we play we will not win. We will draw or lose. We will get relegated. It has been decided.
