When news began to emerge of the shootings in Las Vegas, I admit to a dread that we would discover that this had been an act of Islamist terrorism, pitching good Americans against evil Muslims, and pushing us further towards the precipice of war and fascism upon which our world seems to be teetering. A dark and sombre feeling replaced this dread when it emerged that this horrific gun crime was a white American firing on his fellow citizens for motives that remain unclear, in an act which seems to fit every possible description of “evil”.
