Cormac Murphy-O’Connor was a student at the Venerable English College in Rome during the years 1950-57. During all that time I was a fellow student of his. I had arrived a year ealier but stayed on for an extra year as a doctoral student. Like everyone else in the college, I found him a delightful companion and we became close in several ways.
