Though climate change is most often deemed to account for the trend towards stronger, more alcoholic wines, changing consumer tastes have also contributed to the fashion. The more rapid ripening, due to a warming climate, was preceded by improved viticultural practices that enabled winemakers to produce riper grapes with higher sugar levels and thus potentially greater alcoholic strength.
