Ask any farmer in north Dorset, where I live, which way they voted in the European Union referendum and, to a man or a woman, they will admit to being Leavers. But now, having been struck by the possibility that being out of the EU could mean losing their financial subsidies, which many regard as essential life support, they have become a little less ardent, and even coy about the choice they made in June last year.
