The former Archbishop of Melbourne, Cardinal Archbishop of Sydney and at present suspended Prefect for the Secretariat of the Economy at the Vatican, George Pell, has been charged by Victoria police in Melbourne for historic abuse crimes. If it is not an explosive situation already, its potential to be so is of course enormous. One of the questions that immediately arose was whether, there being no extradition treaty between Australia and the Holy See, Cardinal Pell would come home to face the charges.
