The tragedy in all this is that the evidence suggests the Israeli population is, by a decisive margin, more moderate than its government.
Most Israelis do not underwrite the atrocities committed in their name, whether in the West Bank, Gaza or southern Lebanon. They want the remaining hostages brought home, not used as bargaining chips.
