A clash between law and love


 
One stated aim of Pope Francis’ papacy is to open up seemingly closed questions in the sensitive areas of marriage, sexuality and family life. Halfway between last autumn’s synod in Rome and the second one due to be held this October, none of the questions look like being answered. There are plainly two camps emerging, and no side is listening to the other – except to disagree. If after the second synod the Pope has to come down on one side or the other, a crisis in the Church seems inevitable. There may be a spate of resignations at the top; there may be some painful dismissals. It is the biggest test yet of this papacy.
