Spiritual have attacked the scheme to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda as a policy that should “shame us as a nation”. They say in a letter to The Times, “The shame is our own, because our Christian heritage should inspire us to treat asylum seekers with compassion, fairness and justice …” The Prince of Wales is reported to have described the Rwanda deportation policy as “appalling”. Catholic bishops in the United Kingdom and other religious leaders have spoken out in similar terms.
