All politicians love to be liked. This makes them open to pressure from below, from public opinion in general and lobby groups in particular. This represents the best hope that leaders of the world’s governments gathered in Glasgow for the COP26 environmental summit will make ambitious commitments on climate change, and then abide by them. There are many secular pressure groups working in this field, but of at least equal significance are religious movements and institutions, including the Churches. People of faith have begun to grasp the seriousness of the challenge that global warming represents – not just to human life, but to all of God’s beautiful creation. And Pope Francis is their most prominent and eloquent spokesman: the man, so to speak, with the most clout. He is the faith leader above all whose disapproval politicians should fear.
