There can be no escaping the moral dimension at the heart of the Afghanistan mess. Public opinion in the United States, the United Kingdom and elsewhere is beginning to wrestle with that key issue. In fact it has been posed by President Joe Biden himself, who fulfilled his pre-election promise to have done with the Afghanistan “nation-building” enterprise on the grounds that it never was a morally sound idea.
Intervening in Afghanistan to root out the nest of Arab terrorists called al-Qaeda could qualify as a just cause. Al-Qaeda had killed nearly 3,000 innocent Americans in the horrific 9/11 attacks and showed every sign of wanting to do the same again, and more.
