As a “city on the hill” showing the world what the best expression of liberal democracy looks like, the United States of America has been shining a dimmed and flickering light of late. It is not the beacon of enlightened freedom its founders wanted it to be, but a nation in turmoil as the very sinews of democratic government are strained to breaking point. Every other country in the world has something at stake in the success of this trial of strength between democratic order and its opposite, tyrannical oligarchy.
