Many parts of the developing world are being ravaged by Covid-19, none more so than India. The daily death toll there is around 4,000; in comparison, the daily death toll in the United Kingdom is now in single figures. Three differences stand out. Although India is the world’s largest producer of Covid vaccines, vaccination programmes have been slow to start. Second, there is an acute shortage of clinical oxygen supplies needed to treat patients with a severe Covid infection; and third, mechanical ventilators are in short supply. Britain’s progress in vaccinating its population, on the other hand, has been ahead of almost all other countries.
