Just when how best to handle Iran has become one of the top issues in foreign policy, thousands of people have rioted in the capital, Tehran, against rising prices and general economic misery. The Iranian economy has suffered from years of Western sanctions aimed at persuading the regime to abandon its nuclear weapons programme, and though the pressure was lifted a little by the international anti-nuclear agreement – which the United States has just repudiated – life is still hard.
