To me, an under-appreciated find at Sutton Hoo was the set of 10 lovely silver bowls from the Byzantine Empire, piled one on another on the left of the body.
Carey Mulligan (15 years ago the “ignorant, idle and vain” Kitty Bennet in Pride and Prejudice) now burrows nobly into Suffolk with Ralph Fiennes, in The Dig, a film about the excavation of a 90-foot Anglo-Saxon ship at Sutton Hoo on the brink of war in 1939.
